https://winniethepooh.disney.com/🎉 Did you know A.A. Milne’s beloved Winnie the Pooh turns 98 years old this year? Even after almost a century, the adventures of Pooh Bear and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood continue to enchant kids and adults alike. What makes this story timeless? It’s all about the characters!
The Real Story Behind Winnie the Pooh
Before diving into the characters, it is important to know how these lovable characters came to life. It all started one day in the 1920’s when the author A.A. Milne took his son Christopher Robin Milne to the ZSL London Zoo. At the zoo, Christopher Robin saw this beautiful black bear named Winnie. Due to his son’s fascination with this bear, A.A. Milne bought his son a bear stuffed animal, and he promptly named it Winnie the Pooh.
The novel Winnie the Pooh, and all of its subsequent adaptations (just like Winnie the Pooh KIDS!) were inspired by the playful imagination of Christopher Robin Milne and his adventures with his stuffed bear, Winnie the Pooh. Christopher Robin Milne also had a stuffed pig, tiger, donkey, and kangaroo that came on these adventures. Do you see where I’m going with this? 😏
Meet the Characters of the Hundred Acre Wood
In nearly every telling of the story of Winnie the Pooh, including our upcoming production of Winnie the Pooh KIDS, there are nine central characters: Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Owl, and Rabbit. Christopher Robin is an elementary school aged boy (based off of A.A. Milne’s actual son of the same name) who is the owner of the eight other characters. On weekends and school holidays, he takes his stuffed animals out into the forest behind his house, The Hundred Acre Wood, and goes on adventures with them. Christopher Robin loves each stuffed animal (though Pooh is his favorite) and gives them each unique personalities.
🐻 As with most tellings, the central character of our show is none other than the “tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff” himself. Any guesses on who this character might be? If you guessed that willy, nilly, silly Winnie the Pooh; you’re correct! Winnie the Pooh is a friend to all of the creatures of the Hundred Acre Wood, but 👦 Christopher Robin is his very best friend. Pooh is not the smartest bear in the forest, but he certainly is the kindest. Pooh is always on the lookout for two things: 1.) his friends’ best interests and 2.) honey (which sometimes gets him into some sticky situations!)
🐷 Our next character is a nervous little pig. Which character might this be? If you guessed Piglet, you’re correct! Despite Piglet’s fears and small size, he’s always there for his friends.
🐯 Our next character is always a crowd favorite. This character is a one of a kind tiger. Truly! He’s the only tiger like this in the world! Which character is this? If you guessed the bouncy and lovable Tigger, you are correct! Tigger is boisterous and always up for an adventure! Whenever his friends are in trouble, Tigger is always ready to bounce in danger’s path to help them! When Tigger first arrived in the Hundred Acre Wood, the other animals weren’t too sure about him because he was different. But, Tigger’s proud of his differences because they make him special. Tigger helps the other characters to learn that being different is a superpower! As Tigger often sings, “the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is I’m the only one!”
Another beloved character is a donkey with a notably bleak demeanor. This character is none other than the lovable Eeyore! While Eeyore may be a little down in the dumps, he always tries his best to help his friends.
🦘These next two characters are a package deal. You very rarely ever see one without the other! If you guessed Kanga and little Roo, you are correct! Kanga is a wise and nurturing kangaroo, and Roo is her adventurous son! Kanga acts like a mother figure to all of the creatures of the Hundred Acre Wood, not just to Roo! Roo is a bundle of fun and is always ready for an adventure with his role model, Tigger!
🦉Our next character is the smartest animal in all of the Hundred Acre Wood. Whenever Pooh or his friends are in trouble, they run to him for advice. Who could this be? If you guessed Owl, you are correct! Owl takes great pride in his smarts and loves that all of his friends come to him for help!
🐇Our final character is the self appointed leader of the Hundred Acre Wood. He is stubborn, but super dependable. Who could this final character be? Who are we missing? If you said rabbit; great job!
Why Winnie the Pooh Is More Than Just a Story
This tale isn’t just about honey pots and bouncy adventures. It’s a story about friendship, kindness, and celebrating our differences. Whether it’s Tigger teaching his friends to embrace their unique qualities or Pooh showing the power of a big heart, these timeless lessons make Winnie the Pooh a favorite for all ages.
