In the first installment of our “Cast Spotlight” series, we are thrilled to introduce the fabulous actress who will be taking on role of Deloris Van Cartier in the Off Broad Street Players’ production of Sister Act!
Carmen Delia Bryant returns to the Levoy Theatre stage after previously starring in the Off Broad Street Players’ production of Shrek the Musical for which she won the Wally Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Other credits include Cumberland County College productions of Les Miserables (ensemble) and Little Shop of Horrors (Ronnette).
When asked what her favorite moment in Sister Act is, Carmen shares “The teacher in me can truly relate to Deloris’s moment in “Raise Your Voice.” It’s a great feeling when you recognize untapped talent in a person, and finally get them to tackle their fear and go for it!”
Carmen is a full time Drama Teacher at Buena Regional Middle School and part time Mary Kay Independent Senior Consultant. She earned a BA in Theatre Arts from Rutgers University, and is the drama director for both the Buena Middle and High School Drama Clubs. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Taman, and has 4 children.
Carmen says, “I, of course like many others, fell in love with the original movie version of “Sister Act” starring Whoopi Goldberg.”
About her role of Deloris, she shares, “I think to understand Deloris, one has to understand what drives her to reach for success. She’s the type of character who, if told she can’t do something, will find a way to prove everyone wrong. She may be a little rough around the edges, but in the end we see she has a good heart and finds love and acceptance from her ‘sisters.’”
“First and foremost, I have to say I love the music! As Deloris says, ‘when you sing, it’s not just notes
. This is rejoicing.’ The disco vibe mixed with spiritual soul is so much fun to sing!” she explains. “Not only is Sister Act a fun, family friendly show…it also has a great message. We don’t always know why people come in and out of our lives, but every encounter is an opportunity to learn, to grow, to inspire, and to love!”
Come see Carmen and the rest of her cast mates “spread the love around” when OBSP’s fabulous production of Sister Act, dances onto the Levoy’s stage on May 5th through May 14th.
